FMGE For US Graduates: Every year thousands of students from India go abroad for medical studies. Although most of the Indians prefer to take admission in Central Asian countries or Russia-Ukraine, but there are some students who want to go to America. However, Indian students pursuing medical education in America also face a big concern. They do not know whether they will be allowed to practice directly after returning to India or not.

National Medical Commission (NMC) has made rules regarding Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), i.e. students studying medicine from abroad. where in india MBBS degree is given, whereas in many countries of the world the same degree is available under different names. In America it is known as Doctor of Medicine (MD). In such a situation, let us know whether students pursuing medical education from America have to give any exam before practicing in India or not.

What are the general rules regarding FMGE?

According to NMC rules, Indians returning from medical studies abroad are allowed to practice in the country only if they appear in the ‘Foreign Medical Graduate Examination’ (FMGE) Let’s clear. This is a very difficult exam and its pass percentage is very low. NMC says, under the Screening Test Regulations any Indian Citizen or Overseas Indian Citizen (NRC)OCI) A person who pursues medical education from a university outside India will get registration in NMC or State Medical Council only if he qualifies FMGE.

What is the rule regarding America on FMGE?

According to NMC guidelines, medical graduates from five English-speaking countries are exempted from FMGE. This also includes graduates studying medicine from America. However, they are exempted from FMGE only if they fulfill certain conditions. For example, if someone has just obtained an MD degree in the US, which is an undergraduate medical qualification. In such a situation, they will have to qualify the FMGE exam before practicing in India.

Similarly, if a person has completed post graduate medical qualification and has also got permission to practice medicine in America. Then in such a situation that person does not need to give FMGE exam to practice in India. Here by post graduate medical qualification we mean specialist doctor. Usually graduates pursuing MD do specialization during residency, which takes 3 years to complete.

According to NMC, ‘A person who has an undergraduate medical qualification in the US and has also obtained a postgraduate medical qualification here will not be required to pass the screening test for registration. Apart from this, he has also got permission to practice in the country. In simple language, if you complete both MD and your Residency (PG) in America, then you do not have to give FMGE to practice in India.
