The first rain itself has brought trouble for Mumbaikars. Many areas of Mayanagari were inundated due to torrential rain overnight.
Mumbai Rain News: Monsoon has finally arrived in Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, amid a long-standing water shortage. Monsoon has arrived almost two weeks later than scheduled. However, the first rain itself has brought trouble for Mumbaikars. Due to the torrential rain overnight, several areas of Mayanagari were submerged in water, due to which there were incidents of traffic jams and walls collapsing.
The accident happened right in front of the mayor
Amidst all this, an incident took place on Wednesday morning which has opened the floodgates of municipal corporation claims. When Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde went down to the ground to review the rain situation, a man suddenly collapsed in an open manhole in front of her eyes. Later it was found that the person who fell in the drain was none other than a cleaning employee of BMC. The video of the entire incident is going viral on social media and people are raising questions about the negligence of the system.
The mayor lashed out at the officials
Mayor Ritu Tawde was very angry after this incident which happened right in front of the Mayor. He scolded the officers present at the spot and issued a stern warning that if a manhole is found open in any part of the city, the responsible officer of that ward will be suspended with immediate effect.
However, later defending the mayor said that the drain cover was removed only to clean the garbage and barricades and alert boards were also installed there. He has appealed to the citizens to read the caution boards put up by the BMC and be alert. He also claimed that the pumps are working on a war footing to remove water from the roads of Mumbai.
Politics heats up in Mumbai amid rainy weather
On the other hand, with Mumbai drenched in the first rains, now the issue has taken a political color. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray has hit out at the ruling Mahayuti government. He alleged on the social media platform that the BJP-led government has completely squandered the funds of the BMC.
Aditya Thackeray further added that the current government rejected the suggestions of the previous Mahavikas Aghadi government and did not build rainwater harvesting tanks, which were much needed for a coastal city like Mumbai. He quipped that between the year 2020 to 2022, we had successfully started water pumping system in areas like Hind Mata and Milan subway, but sadly the current rulers are now unable to operate the pumps and holding tanks built properly.
