Food Safety In Vadodara:Under the instructions of the Municipal Commissioner of Vadodara Municipality and under the guidance of the Health Department, random checking operations were carried out at the units selling food in the city. In Vadodara’s well-known night market, Chhani Food Court and Akota Stadium area, Food Safety Officers with ‘Food Safety on Wheels’ van conducted intensive checks.
A total of 45 units including 29 hawkers and 16 food vending units were inspected during this campaign. Also, as many as 121 food vendors and employees were given strict guidelines on maintaining cleanliness as per schedule-4.
During the investigation, 79 food samples were tested on the spot, out of which 10 samples were found to be suspicious and an inedible and harmful quantity of 14.5 kg was immediately destroyed. It mainly consisted of colored spices, stale food and contaminated gravies.
Which units were prosecuted?
- Destruction of 4.0 kg quantity of Om Sing and Farsan (Akota) colored roasted peas.
- Punjabi (Night Bazaar): 2.0 kg quantity of colored Punjabi vegetable gravy lost.
- Rajasthan Kulfi House (Night Bazaar): Stale pineapple juice, strawberry juice, mawa rabdi and mawa kulfi found and destroyed 1.5 kg quantity.
- Bombay Momos (Night Market): 500 grams of stale momos destroyed.
- Shere Punjab (Chhani Food Court): 2.5 kg quantity of stale boiled noodles was destroyed.
- Dosa Center (Chhani Food Court): 4.0 kg quantity of stale copra chutney was destroyed.
This action has led to an uproar among vendors who are negligent in selling food items. The health department has given a clear warning that strict legal action will be taken against any unit that tampers with the health of citizens. This kind of checking will continue in the future also.
