Ahmedabad: A two-day capacity building workshop on ‘Active Mobility’ was successfully organized to promote the development of a safe, healthy and people-centric road system in the city in collaboration with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and MoHUA.

Guidance from global experts

Urban mobility experts, government officials, consultants, planners, architects, researchers and students were brought together on one platform to provide guidance on various aspects of making walking and cycling safer. The workshop was held under the ‘Sustainable Urban Mobility – Air Quality, Climate Action and Accessibility (SUM-ACA)’ project. In which the Dutch Cycling Embassy and international experts from the ACTIVE program with the support of the Netherlands government were also specially present.

Special preparations for 2036 Olympics

A modern and sustainable urban transport system is being developed in Ahmedabad in view of the planning of Commonwealth Games-2030 and Olympics-2036 by the Government of India. The workshop is an important part of the same capacity building programme, so that the city’s roads become world-class during the upcoming mega sports events.

Practical training and on-site learning

The workshop emphasized not only classroom sessions, but also practical training:

On-Site Learning: Participants conducted on-site evaluations of city roads and prepared practical design suggestions.

Cycle Ride: A guided cycle ride was organized in collaboration with MYBYK, to understand the roads from a cyclist’s point of view.

Technical Aspects: Complete streets, safe intersection design, universal accessibility and how to integrate cycling with public transportation were discussed.

Future planning and cooperation

Apart from AMC, students from GSRTC, GMRC, and CEPT University actively participated in this program. The project will be further accelerated through training implementation evaluation and online follow-up sessions in the near future. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has expressed its gratitude to all the partner organizations for this successful planning.
