Government prosecutors in the French capital Paris raided the offices of social media platform X on Tuesday. This action has been taken as part of a preliminary investigation, in which allegations of several serious crimes are being investigated.
According to the Paris Prosecutor’s Office, the investigation into the case was started by the Cyber Crime Unit in January last year. The investigation is looking into whether the platform has played any role in the spread of obscene content and sexually objectionable deepfake videos involving minors.
Action taken to investigate serious allegations
The investigating agencies are also probing whether there was any involvement on the platform in cases like content denying crimes against humanity and tampering with automated data systems through organized groups.

Due to these allegations, prosecutors have also decided to interrogate X owner Elon Musk and former CEO Linda Yaccarino. Both have been called for voluntary interview on 20th April. Additionally, in the same week, employees of the platform have also been summoned to appear as witnesses.

Questions also raised on algorithms and AI chatbots
The investigation was initiated after a complaint by a French MP. The complaint alleged that X’s algorithms were working in a biased manner, which could have affected the automated data system. The scope of the investigation was later expanded when reports surfaced that X’s AI chatbot Grok was accused of Holocaust denial and spreading obscene deepfake content.

Prosecutors say the investigation is aimed at ensuring that social media platforms operating in France follow the country’s laws. At present the investigation is going on and more revelations are likely to be made in this matter in the coming time.
