The sensational theft worth crores of rupees that took place in Tata Group’s Caratlane jewelery showroom located on Delhi Road was carried out by the vicious criminal Irshad alias Kala single-handedly in a very well-planned manner. The accused had reached the roof of the showroom the night before with essential items and food, stayed in the tin shed above in the rain the whole day and escaped after stealing at 11.30 pm.
Sadar Bazar police station along with SWAT and surveillance team have exposed the incident. Police arrested the main accused, his wife, mother, brother and sister-in-law on Monday afternoon and recovered diamonds and gold jewelery worth about Rs 3 crore and Rs 45,000 in cash. The accused had conducted recce of the showroom for a month.
SSP Ashish Tiwari told in a press conference at Police Lines on Tuesday that the incident took place on the night of 23 January 2026. The next day, showroom manager Ankit Mukherjee had informed the police station Sadar Bazar that thieves had stolen jewelery and cash by cutting the wall of the showroom.
The police had registered a case against unknown. Sadar Bazar police station, SWAT and surveillance team, in a joint action, arrested five accused, including three women, near the small railway line (Khalasi line) on Monday. The arrested accused include Irshad alias Kala, his younger brother Dilshad, mother Kali, wife Seema and Dilshad’s wife Salma. Irshad buys scrap goods from a cart and Dilshad is an auto driver.
The police have recovered nine necklaces, 67 bracelets, 17 mangalsutras, 90 rings, 32 chains, 32 pairs of ear rings, 11 bangles, 18 pendants, two neck sets, three charms, cash and some artificial jewelery from the possession of the accused. Irshad had committed the crime alone.
The accused and his family were planning to sell jewelery in other states when they were caught by the police. Irshad is a vicious criminal and 24 cases including theft, embezzlement and Arms Act are registered against him in various police stations. The police registered a case and presented the accused in the court, from where they were sent to jail.
Stayed on showroom roof for 20 hours, essential items were in the bag
During police interrogation, Irshad told that he disguised himself as a scrap dealer and did recce around the showroom for a month. After this, he reached the rooftop of the showroom at 3 o’clock in the night of January 22 with a bag containing Glander, food, liquor and gloves etc. The weather was bad throughout the next day and night. Came down through parallel stairs and cut the wall of the showroom and entered the showroom at quarter to eleven in the night.
Wearing gloves, he packed his luggage in 45 minutes, changed his clothes and came out at 11.30. Meanwhile, he remained on the roof of the showroom for about twenty hours. He had covered his face to avoid CCTV and fled from the spot limping after the incident.

After the incident, Irshad had got his growing beard cut. The police scanned the month-long CCTV footage around the showroom and identified the suspicious people through the informer. Meanwhile, the accused was seen around the station with his family. The police laid a trap and caught them.
The accused kept changing his location.
Accused Irshad is originally a resident of Mohalla Kotla in village Ambehata Peer of Nakud police station area. For about one and a half years, Salma, Arshad, Dilshad were living in a rented house of wife Seema Roorkee in Kaliyar. Whereas Irshad was living with his mother in Ram-Rahim Colony located in Kotwali Mandi area. The accused used to change the rented house within a few days.
