After the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed between Tamil Nadu government and Nokia in August 2024, its effect is now visible. What does the increase in investment indicate?

Nokia has increased its first phase investment from Rs 220 crore to Rs 270 crore. Not only this, the company is expected to invest about Rs 300 crore more in the second phase. This is a clear indication that Nokia is considering India, especially Tamil Nadu, as a long-term tech hub.

Which technologies will be worked on?

This research and development facility has been built keeping in mind the high-speed broadband requirements of the future. Here mainly work will be done to bring 10G, 25G, 50G and 100G optical networks, fixed wireless access (FWA) and next generation fixed network broadband technology. This center will work like a global test bed, where new technology will be developed and tested.

Benefit of employment and skill development

This new research and development facility has created more than 200 high-end tech jobs. There is also hope of promoting advanced networking, deep-tech and engineering skills. This will strengthen Chennai’s identity not only as an IT but also as a telecom innovation hub.

What does the government say?

According to Industries Minister TRB Raja, these investments are a result of the promises made by Chief Minister MK Stalin during his visit to America. This step is being considered important towards making Tamil Nadu a preferred destination for global deep-tech and engineering companies.
