Was Captain Sumit Sabharwal defamed by the American media?
New Delhi: The same incident happened in another Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft of Air India at London’s Heathrow Airport, due to which a London-bound flight crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12 last year. The only difference was that even before taking off from London to Bangalore, the crew got wind of the fuel switch switching from ‘run’ to ‘cut-off’ mode on its own. This fact had also come to light in the initial investigation of the Ahmedabad plane crash, but then the American media was the first to blame the failure of the fuel switch on the experienced pilot of the plane, Captain Sumit Sabharwal. His father has reached the Supreme Court to protect the honor of his late son.

What happened on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner in London

On February 1, during an engine check at London’s Heathrow Airport, the fuel switch of Air India aircraft Boeing 787 (VT-ANX) automatically moved from ‘run’ to ‘cut-off’ position. During this investigation by the aircraft crew, the switch failed twice in a row and on the third time it got locked in ‘run’ mode. Then this Air India plane left for Bengaluru and now it has been stopped there. According to a TOI report, a senior commander said, ‘The London incident directly challenges the notion that the movement of the fuel switch in the Air India accident (Ahmedabad) was done by the pilot. Till now the cut-off action was considered as sure proof of the pilot’s action. He has pointed out the reasons behind the incident ranging from technical glitches to corruption.

What happened in Ahmedabad Air India 171 crash

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) in its initial investigation in July last year found that both fuel switches of the engines of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner had gone from ‘run’ to ‘cut-off’ shortly after takeoff. Even before this report came out, media houses like America’s Wall Street Journal had started blaming the plane’s Captain Sumit Sabharwal for the switch being switched off. The report claimed that there were no problems with the plane and the investigation focused on the pilots to see if they made any mistakes. Some media reports also tried to question the mental condition of the pilot. Because, in the AAIB investigation, these things were recorded in the cockpit voice recorder – One pilot asked the other pilot – ‘Why did you close the fuel switch?’ The second pilot said- ‘I did not stop.’ Instead of paying attention to the answer, some forces merely exaggerated the question.

Fault found in fuel switch of Boeing 787 earlier also

Air safety expert Captain Amit Singh says that the London incident is worrying because in 2018, the US aviation regulator had warned about a malfunction in the fuel switch of the Boeing 787, due to which there was a possibility of sudden shutdown of the engine. After this incident, the demand for a serious investigation into the technical problem of the plane has started gaining momentum again. In the Ahmedabad plane crash, a total of 260 people including 241 passengers on board the plane were killed, only one passenger narrowly escaped.

American media in a conspiracy to save Boeing?

The way the American media tried to tarnish the image of late pilot-in-command Captain Sumit Sabharwal, it turned the pain of his elderly father into unbearable pain. At the age of 91, Pushkraj Sabharwal had to knock on the door of the Supreme Court to get justice for his son after suppressing his grief in his chest. He raised questions about the credibility and transparency of the investigation, because efforts were being made to limit the scope of the investigation to the dead pilots instead of technical flaws. In such a situation, the question arises whether a conspiracy was hatched behind all this to save the American aircraft manufacturing company Boeing? Because, this company has already been under the scanner and the American whistle blower himself has repeatedly exposed its actions.
