The Union Minister has said that we cannot mix ethanol in diesel. So we are also making isobutanol from ethanol. Isobutanol can be a substitute for diesel. Work is also underway to blend 15 percent isobutanol in diesel.
This is not the first time that 15 percent isobutanol blend in diesel is being talked about. Last month also, Union Minister Gadkari said that the government is considering the possibility of mixing 15 percent isobutanol in diesel. The government has started ethanol-based petrol from the year 2023 itself. Currently, E20 petrol is being sold in the country. It contains 20 percent ethanol and 80 percent petrol.
Isobutanol is also an alcohol, which falls into the biofuel category. It is prepared from ethanol. Ethanol cannot be blended directly into diesel, in which case isobutanol will be prepared and then blended into diesel. Isobutanol can be produced from the fermentation of sugarcane, grain, or mixed biomass from agriculture.
