Jagran correspondent, Gorakhpur. The treatment has turned into a tragedy for the patients who came to New Rajesh Hitech Hospital, Jaddupatti, Sikriganj for cataract operation with the hope of light. The eyes of 19 patients have become infected. Eight of these people have lost their eyesight. So far 17 patients have arrived at AIIMS Delhi on different days. Of these, the eye of Shankaravati Devi of Rahdauli has been removed and an artificial eye has been installed. She returned home on Thursday.
Devraji Devi, Meera Devi, Arjun Singh, Ramdarsh, Ramavati, Kailashi, Ramsaran and Buddhisagar are admitted in AIIMS Delhi. Of these, Devraji, Meera, Arjun, Ramsaran and Ramdarsh have lost their eyesight. Doctors are trying to reduce the infection. Eight patients are staying with their relatives and going to OPD from time to time for treatment. Ranjit and Jairam have been admitted to AIIMS Gorakhpur. He has also lost his eyesight.
The spread of serious infection after cataract operation has raised questions on the functioning of the health system. Out of 30 patients who underwent surgery in the hospital, 19 have been confirmed to have eye infection, while eight patients have lost their vision. Despite such a serious incident, till now no concrete punitive action has been taken against the hospital management or the concerned doctor.
At present only the Operation Theater (OT) has been sealed. Jairam’s son Praveen says that after the surgery, many patients complained of severe pain, swelling and pus in the eyes. Within a few days, the infection increased and the situation became so serious that the eyesight of many could not be saved. There is panic and anger among the relatives regarding this.
After the matter gained momentum, an investigation committee was constituted by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). Chairman of the committee, Dr. AK Chaudhary said that the department’s sympathies are with the affected patients and the investigation is being conducted with complete impartiality. As a precautionary measure, the operation theater of the hospital has been sealed. Besides, documents related to the registration of the hospital, degree of the concerned doctor, qualification of the OT technician, statements of the staff, register of Ayushman Bharat scheme and samples of injections and medicines used in the operation have been secured.
