State Bureau, Lucknow. The state government on Monday introduced a bill in the Legislative Assembly to remove the word “leprosy home” from the Uttar Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act 1959 and Municipal Council Act 1916. This bill has been brought in place of the ordinance which the government had issued on February 2.

On May 7, 2025, the Supreme Court had directed all the states to remove discriminatory provisions in the laws related to leprosy patients. In this, the states were asked to form a committee to identify and eliminate such sections, so that they are not discriminated against, because these matters are related to human rights and dignity.

The government recommended removing the word

On this basis, a three-member committee was formed under the chairmanship of Principal Secretary Legislative in the state. Based on the instructions of the Supreme Court, the committee had recommended removing the word “leprosy home” from both the acts of the body.
