As the season is nearing its end, the market is witnessing a sharp rise in prices as the income decreases. At APMC (APMC – Jamalpur/Vasna Market Yard) located in Vasna, Ahmedabad, there has been a huge increase in the price of mango today on June 24. According to information from official sources of the market yard, the price of mangoes in the market today started from ₹ 1500 to ₹ 4000 per maund (20 kg) depending on the quality and variety. Due to these skyrocketing prices, eating mangoes at the end of the season is financially burdensome for common citizens and the middle class.
Prices skyrocket as incomes fall: Saffron and hafus expensive
According to market yard traders, by the end of June every year, the income from the famous saffron mangoes of Valsadi Hafoos and Gir becomes negligible. As the orchards have run out of stock this year too, the good quality mangoes that are hitting the market are fetching very high prices. Especially premium quality saffron and Ratnagiri hafoos have reached ₹3500 to ₹4000 per maund, while even normal or medium grade mangoes are nowhere to be found below ₹1500 to ₹2000. Due to such high prices in the wholesale market itself, piyat and lariwalas are charging ₹150 to ₹250 per kg in the retail market.
Housewives and businessmen worried
Due to this sudden boom in the market, the budget of the housewives has been disrupted. According to the customers who came to buy in the vegetable market, the prices of mangoes were moderate at the beginning of the season, but now it has become impossible to buy mangoes to eat in the last days. On the other hand, due to high prices, retailers are also buying limited quantities, as common consumers are avoiding buying such expensive mangoes. Traders predict that the season will officially end in the next one week and after that only cold storage mangoes will be seen in the market, the prices of which may still be higher.
