International Yoga Day 2026: The 12th International Yoga Day 2026 is being celebrated with great fervor and grandeur all over the world including India. This year the global festival is being celebrated under the special theme of “Yoga for Healthy Aging”. The main purpose of this theme is to emphasize the important role yoga plays in maintaining people’s physical health, mental well-being and a healthy lifestyle even at an advanced age. This ancient heritage of India has emerged today as a major mass movement for universal well-being globally.

PM Modi’s yoga message from Kolkata’s historic Red Road

This year the main center of national celebrations in India is the city of Kolkata in West Bengal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is presiding over this national event directly from Kolkata’s iconic and historic Red Road. As soon as the Prime Minister reached the stage of the programme, he was given a grand welcome by thousands of participants. Addressing the large gathering, PM Modi said, “From the Himalayas to the Indian Ocean, and from the North-East in the East and Bengal to Saurashtra in the West, today the entire nation seems to be filled with the wonderful energy of Yoga.”

After the address, the Prime Minister personally performed yoga with thousands of citizens on the Red Road under the Common Yoga Protocol session. Not only this, during the yoga session, PM Modi also went among the other participants who were doing asanas very easily and helped improve their postures and boosted their spirits.

On this auspicious occasion of International Yoga Day, the security forces of the country have also shown great enthusiasm. Courageous personnel of the 47th Battalion of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) inspired the countrymen by practicing yoga on the banks of the world-famous and extremely cold Pangong Tso Lake in Leh, Ladakh, amid the snowy peaks. On the other hand, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also participated in a large group yoga program organized in the state and practiced various asanas of yoga with the general public.

A global dance of yoga at 2500 locations in 210 countries of the world

Due to the concerted and intensive efforts of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), there has been an unprecedented yoga craze abroad as well. More than 210 Indian missions and embassies around the world have organized special yoga programs at around 2,500 different international locations. Millions of foreign nationals from Western countries to Arab countries are enthusiastically participating in this festival of Indian culture.

Special arrangements at 100 historical and iconic places of the country

This year’s celebration saw a unique confluence of India’s glorious history and culture. Special yoga sessions have been organized at 100 iconic and mythological heritage sites across the country by the Ministry of Culture with special support from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). This laudable initiative has succeeded in a beautiful attempt to weave together India’s rich cultural heritage, famous historical monuments and centuries-old yoga traditions.
