New Army Chief General Dheeraj Seth: General Dheeraj Seth has formally assumed charge as the new Chief of the Indian Army on June 30, 2026. Before assuming the role of Army Chief, he was serving as Deputy Chief of the Army Staff. Retired Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi (PVSM, AVSM) retired from service today after General Dheeraj Seth took charge.
On the historic occasion of this retirement, retired Chief General Upendra Dwivedi was given a formal ‘Guard of Honour’ by the Indian Army at the South Block Lawns in New Delhi on Tuesday. Before this formal farewell ceremony, General Upendra Dwivedi visited the National War Memorial and paid floral tributes to the martyred heroes of the country.
Four decades of distinguished military career and geographic experience
General Dheeraj Seth, an alumnus of the National Defense Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, was commissioned in the Indian Army’s Armored Corps in December 1986. During his long and distinguished military career spanning nearly 40 years, he has gained extremely wide experience in multifaceted areas such as operational, strategic, capability development and organizational. He has held key responsibilities and command positions at various geographical and sensitive fronts of the country. His command assignments mainly include the successful leadership of an Armored Regiment in the desert region as well as the operation of an Armored Brigade on the Western Front and the successful leadership of counter-terrorist forces and various missions in the restive areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
Leadership of major military formations and a rare honor
During his tenure as Lieutenant General, General Dheeraj Seth ably led the ‘Sudarshan Chakra Corps’, a major strike formation of the Indian Army. In addition, he has also served as General Officer Commanding, Delhi Region, where he oversaw important national-international military operations and ceremonial responsibilities.
Subsequently promoted to the rank of Army Commander, he headed two important operational military commands, the South Western Command and the Army Southern Command. He also has the rare military distinction of holding strategic oversight on important fronts for more than two-and-a-half years.
Army modernization and technological change
General Dheeraj Seth has been described by the Ministry of Defense as a highly skilled and visionary military professional. They have repeatedly topped military training courses. He is an alumnus of the Higher Command Course, National Defense College and has also been a part of the prestigious Command and Staff Course in Paris.
General Seth has given major impetus to the modernization drive of the Army by holding key positions in the Strategic Planning and Capability Development Departments at the Army Headquarters. He has played a central role in shaping the Army’s long-term military infrastructure initiatives and capability roadmap. His contribution has been unparalleled in aligning the operational needs of the Indian Army with the emerging battlefield technologies and modern requirements of future warfare, which will take the Army’s combat capabilities to new heights in the coming years.
