The water level of Vadodara’s Ajwa lake has touched its lowest since 2018 at 205.68 feet, becoming a water concern for the city. If there is no good rainfall, Vadodara may be forced to cut drinking water supply, leading to a severe water crisis.
Vadodara News: The decline in the water level of the historic Ajwa lake has become a matter of concern for the residents of Vadodara. For the first time since 2018, the lake’s water level has reached 205.68 feet, sending Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials and the water supply department into a scramble. If there is no good rain in the coming days, there is a strong possibility that the city will be forced to cut drinking water supply.
Today the water level of the lake has decreased
Ajwa Lake is the main source of drinking water for the eastern and surrounding areas of Vadodara city. In the last eight years, the situation has never been so serious. Technically speaking, when the lake level is 209 feet or more, the water naturally reaches the treatment plant as per the law of gravity. But, to deliver water at the current level of 205.68 feet, alternative and expensive systems like pumping are now being resorted to, which has increased the operational pressure on the system.
Potential for severe water crisis
According to corporation officials, the entire administrative system now depends on the grace of the Maharaja. It is very inevitable that there will be rains in the uplands and the income of new neer will start today. If the rains are delayed or the catchment area does not receive enough rainfall, the residents of Vadodara may face severe water crisis.
VMC’s eye on critical situation
Keeping this critical situation in mind, the system of VMC is continuously monitoring the situation closely. In the future, if the storage of water in the reservoir does not increase, the system may take drastic decisions about how much water to cut in which areas and how to manage water. At present, the people of the entire city and the meeting of the corporation are waiting for the arrival of the Meghraja.
