Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk may soon open the source code of his messaging app XChat. He recently told in an X post that he is thoroughly investigating the security system of XChat, after the completion of which its source code will be opened. This means that it will be tested how safe the chat system is from hacking, data leaks, espionage or cyber attacks.
What does it mean to open source the code?
According to Elon Musk, the entire source code of XChat will be made open source. A company open-sources its software only when it wants developers, tech experts and security researchers to see, understand and investigate it. Being open-source, anyone can test how the system works and whether it has any security flaws or weaknesses. If a problem arises, it can be caught and corrected quickly.

Additionally, the open-source code also assures users that there is nothing hidden inside the app, such as covert tracking or wrongful data collection. This is the reason why open-source systems are considered more transparent and secure.
What is XChat?
Let us tell you that Elon Musk’s XChat has direct competition with messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal. It was launched in November 2026 for iOS and Android platforms. Although its function is to send messages, it is very different from WhatsApp and Telegram and claims to provide more user privacy.

In this, conversations are divided into different “circles”, like you can create different circles for friends, family and work. This keeps each chat in its own context and conversations don’t mix.
How is XChat different and secure?
XChat is a privacy-first chat system. Some of its features make users’ chats more secure and private than other platforms:
- The special thing about this platform is that neither a phone number nor an email ID or any central account is required to create an account.
- XChat is based on open protocols like Nostr, where your identity is determined by cryptographic keys. That means your digital identity remains completely under your control and does not depend on any company or server.
- In XChat, the user also gets the freedom as to where and how he wants to store his data. You can choose the relay and file server according to your needs, so you retain full ownership of your chats and files.
- In terms of security, messages and media in XChat are protected by end-to-end encryption. The data is stored locally encrypted and it also has the facility to delete messages or media from both sides.
- Most importantly, the platform does not do any kind of user tracking or data collection. If the code is open-source, its transparency will further increase.
