The surgery of four patients present in a hospital in Delhi was successfully performed through 5G based tele-robotic technology from Vapi city of Gujarat, 1200 km away. Surgeons were not present in the operation theatre, rather the surgeries were carried out remotely through high-speed internet and robotic consoles. Experts believe that this technology can overcome the shortage of expert doctors in small towns in future.

How did the operation happen from 1200 km away?

The patients were in the operation theater (OT) in the Delhi hospital and robotic instruments were attached to their bodies, but the console controlling the surgery was installed in Vapi city of Gujarat. Four different surgeons performed four surgeries sitting there. In which Dr. Vipin Tyagi performed surgery for kidney blockage. Dr. Tarun Mittal and Dr. Mukund Khaitan performed gall bladder operations and Dr. Anmol Ahuja performed successful hernia surgeries. This entire operation was done in real-time through 5G high-speed internet and tele-robotic system.

What is tele-robotic surgery?

Robotic surgery typically consists of two main parts. Robotic Instruments and Consoles. In this, robotic instruments are placed in the patient’s body and the surgeon sits in a console and controls the operation. Although both OTs take place in the same operation theatre, but in this case Kansale was 1200 km away. This was the first time that four surgeries were performed simultaneously from such a distance.

Important role of 5G and high speed internet

According to doctors, a very fast and stable internet connection is necessary for such surgeries. The low latency of 5G technology gives the surgeon real-time control, making the operation possible safely. Because of this, as a precautionary measure, the expert team was present in the OT during the surgery, so that immediate intervention could be done in case of any emergency.

Looking at this entire process, experts believe that this initiative can decide the future direction of medical technology. If high-speed internet and robotic systems become available even in small towns and remote areas, then the shortage of expert surgeons can be overcome. This experiment has shown that technology and connectivity together can bring a new twist to the healthcare sector.
