Facebook’s company WhatsApp now seems to be in trouble. The controversy is over WhatsApp blocking other AI chatbots (like ChatGPT) from running on its platform. For this reason, government agencies are now investigating whether WhatsApp is misusing its power.
European Union warns Meta: If stubbornness is not given up, action will be taken
The European Union (EV) has given a strong warning to Meta Company. He says that it is wrong to block other AI apps on WhatsApp because it is ending fair competition in the market. The Commission has clearly said that if Meta does not give up its insistence then they will take strict action. Even WhatsApp may be forced to include other AI systems on its platform.
Other AI avenues closed on WhatsApp
Due to the new rules of WhatsApp, it is no longer possible to use other AI like OpenAI or Perplexity there. Now only Meta’s own AI (Meta AI) will run on WhatsApp. This is a big thing for India because about 50 crore people use WhatsApp here and now all of them will have only one option left in the name of AI.

What does WhatsApp’s new policy say?
In October 2025, WhatsApp made some new rules for business which have been fully implemented from January 15, 2026. These rules are as follows:
Ban on external AI: Now other AI companies will not be able to provide their services through WhatsApp.
Control of Meta: The meta itself will decide which AI is right and which is against the rules.
Who will get exemption: If a company (like a travel agency) is using a small AI bot just to help its customers, then there will be no restriction on it.
CCI’s concerns in India
The Competition Commission of India (CCI), a government body that monitors fair competition in the Indian market, had warned in a report last year. He says that big tech companies have a lot of data and powerful computers which gives them unfair advantage. CCI believes that, “Big companies can capture the market by using the data and resources they have. This will make it very difficult for new and small companies to start business or grow.”

This matter has become more serious when there is already a debate going on between America’s Trump government and the European Union on controlling tech companies. With this step of WhatsApp, it seems that it is creating an environment where only its rule prevails. This may harm future innovations and competition between other companies.
