Mark Zuckerberg’s company Meta (Facebook) is in the race to make its wearable devices different in the market. It is reported that the company is working on a secret project ‘Name Tag’. Under this, through the AI assistant installed in smart glasses, the person in front can be identified and information can be collected about him. It is believed that this feature can be launched by the end of this year.
Market edge and Zuckerberg’s vision
Through this feature, Meta wants to take its glasses far ahead of the AI products of rival companies. Company CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes that facial recognition capability will make AI assistants more practical and useful. However, there is a lot of discussion going on within the company on how to present it responsibly. According to an internal memo, Meta is considering this as the right time to launch given the current political environment in America.
Questions arising regarding privacy
Even though this feature may sound magical, organizations like ‘American Civil Liberties Union’ (ACLU) are scared about it. Experts say that recognizing people walking on the streets in a moment will destroy the anonymity we all rely on. This technology can be used by governments, corporates or any common person with bad intentions.

Nathan Freed Wessler, a lawyer at the American Civil Liberties Union, an organization working for privacy rights, has warned that face recognition technology in public places can pose a serious threat to people’s freedom of identity.
Critics say that governments, companies or even common people can misuse it. For this reason, restrictions have been imposed on this technology in some cities and states of America. Recently, Democratic lawmakers have demanded Immigration and Customs Enforcement to stop the use of face recognition in public places.
Work on ‘super sensing’ glasses also
Meta argues that this technology will be no less than a miracle for visually impaired people. Organizations like Be My Eyes believe that this feature can change the lives of those who have difficulty seeing the world. Apart from this, Meta is also working on super sensing glasses which will continuously monitor the surroundings and remind the user of important tasks.

There was controversy earlier also
In 2024, two Harvard University students were able to identify strangers in the Boston subway by using a commercial face recognition tool paired with Ray-Ban Meta glasses. This matter went viral on social media and sparked a new debate regarding privacy. Meta says its glasses have LED lights that come on during recording to let people know the camera is active.
