Why is Chinese technology being banned?

America believes that the cameras, microphones and GPS systems installed in cars can be misused for spying. For this reason, the government wants that no Chinese software of any kind should be used in internet-connected car systems.

Under this proposal, car companies will have to prove to the government that the software used in their vehicles is not developed in China nor linked to any Chinese company. Hardware related rules are likely to come into effect from 2030.

Pressure on companies before deadline

Many American auto companies have already started removing Chinese software. If any software is related to China, it will have to be transferred to a non-Chinese company. According to reports, these rules will not be limited to passenger cars only, but can also be applied to products like commercial vehicles and drones in the future.

Growing concern globally

After the Corona epidemic, America started reducing its dependence on Chinese suppliers. Companies like Tesla are also staying away from Chinese parts for vehicles made in America. Not only America, but many countries have become alert regarding data privacy. India has also banned many Chinese apps and products in the last few years due to data security reasons.

However, China still has a strong position in the rare earth material and technology supply chain. At the same time, the Chinese government has been continuously rejecting the allegations that data is spied on through its technology.
