India wants to establish its strong presence in the global race of Artificial Intelligence. In this direction, Andhra Pradesh government has planned to develop Visakhapatnam (Vizag) as the country’s first AI focused data city. The aim of which is to create an integrated data ecosystem that can support the digital economy of the next decade.

Why Visakhapatnam?

This port city situated on the sea shore is in a geographically strategic position. From here, maritime internet cable connectivity is available directly connecting India to South-East Asia. The city is also being developed as a landing point for a submarine cable connecting to Singapore. This clearly means high-speed, low-latency data transfer. Apart from this, this is the biggest requirement for AI companies, because fast and stable connectivity is necessary for large models and cloud processing.

Not just data, but also center of manufacturing

Visakhapatnam will not only store the data, but the machines that run it will also be made here. Under this scheme, factories manufacturing hyperscale data centers, servers, and special water-cooling systems will be set up within a radius of 100 km. The government aims to create an integrated ecosystem where both hardware and software are ready at one place.

Now the race of AI will intensify

Before the AI India Impact Summit 2026 starting in Delhi, Andhra IT Minister Nara Lokesh has made it clear that India is no longer focusing on debating on the adoption of AI, but on running the fastest in it. Visakhapatnam will be the starting point of this race.

The AI Data City project has also started getting support from the industry. Google has promised to build its largest AI infrastructure hub outside the US here. Apart from this, joint ventures of Reliance, Brookfield Corporation and Digital Realty are also investing in AI projects in the state. According to the state government, investment agreements have been signed for more than 700 projects so far.

AI India Impact Summit 2026 will provide global platform

The AI India Impact Summit 2026 to be held in New Delhi will give international recognition to this initiative. CEOs from around the world and top representatives of many countries are participating in this summit. Tech experts are calling it the largest AI platform in the Global South.
