Lata ji was firm on her principles
One of the best things about Lata Mangeshkar was that she was known for her simplicity and principles. In his career spanning over six decades in the music industry, there were many occasions when he refused big projects rather than compromise with his dignity and principles. Lata ji always gave priority to clean singing. If she found the lyrics of any song even slightly vulgar, obscene or ‘cheap’, she would flatly refuse to sing it. He believed that there should be a kind of purity in music.
Which is that wonderful song?
Today we are going to tell you one such incident when a singer refused to sing a superhit song. We are talking about the popular song ‘Abhi Na Jao Bachde’ from the 1961 film ‘Hum Dono’. The lyrics of the song were written by the great poet Sahir Ludhianvi. There is a line in the song – “By leaving incomplete hope, by leaving incomplete thirst…”

Lata ji felt that these lyrics were a bit too ‘romantic’ or ‘bold’ and might not suit her image that well. For this reason Lata ji refused to sing it. Later this duet song was recorded by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle and it became a super duper hit. This song was originally filmed on Deva Anand and Sadhna.
