A major change is being seen on the global technological scene. Countries around the world are no longer seeing Artificial Intelligence as just a technology or tool, but considering it as a part of their sovereignty and strategic strategy. Nvidia’s VP Sovereign AI Calista Redmond said this important thing at the ‘AI India Impact Summit’ on Monday. He made it clear that the countries of the world including India are now focusing not on any one component of AI, but on its entire story and infrastructure. This change is important for countries like India that are racing to develop their own AI capabilities.
From hardware to models
Speaking at the conference, Redmond said that when she talks to different countries globally, there is a clear trend – nations are preparing to play the ‘long game’. They’re not just waiting for the first release or for one application to be successful. Instead, they have their eye on the entire technology stack.
Redmond said that governments are now focusing on creating the hardware, foundational models and infrastructure needed to build great applications. This approach is not limited to just purchasing software, but focuses on strengthening both data infrastructure and physical infrastructure at the domestic level. This has been named ‘Sovereign AI’, which includes large language models trained on local datasets by local teams.
Open Source: The Key to Sovereignty
During the summit, tech leaders also had an in-depth discussion on the role of ‘Open Source AI’. Mark Surman, president of Mozilla, emphasized that centralization of AI is the biggest threat to the digital sovereignty of any country.
According to Surman, open web and open source technology are the answer to this threat. He said that the basic spirit of open source is that anyone, anywhere, can create technology on their own terms. Although this has its challenges, it gives freedom to design the technology in a way that gives countries a better chance of maintaining their sovereignty. Redmond also acknowledged that open source has been a ‘great leveler’ (providing a level playing field) for decades.
India’s AI Mission: Step towards self-reliance
The strategies of the Indian government completely match these ideas of Redmond. India’s ‘India AI Mission’ is aiming to create a comprehensive ecosystem. It aims to democratize access to computing, enhance data quality and develop indigenous AI capabilities.
A major achievement of this year’s summit was the progress of the 12 Indian startups that have been selected under the India AI Mission. These startups are developing indigenous foundation models trained on Indian datasets and languages. They aim to address India’s linguistic diversity and specific regional needs, which Western AI models often cannot.
Way forward: focus on results
The main focus of this summit, which started on Monday, is not just on discussions, but on concrete results. Policymakers and industry leaders believe that the AI ecosystem should be used to increase efficiency, improve productivity and create a ‘multiplier effect’ for the economy.
Redmond’s statement that “countries are looking at the whole story of AI,” shows that AI is no longer just a matter for the IT department, but has become a core part of the national agenda. For countries like India, which want to create inclusive solutions for their population, this ‘Sovereign AI’ is the way of the future.
