Anupam Mittal, founder of People Group and Shaadi.com, has countered the growing criticism of Gen Z employees for changing jobs early in their career. He says it is wrong to shame Generation Z about changing jobs. Also advised Gen Z professionals aged 21 to 25 on when it is right for them to change jobs and when they should stop changing jobs.
Shark Tank India judge Anupam Mittal expressed his opinion about Gen Z changing jobs in his LinkedIn post. He argued that changing jobs at the right time is more about self-awareness than betraying the current company. He has advised senior professionals and so-called gurus, who term Gen Z as ‘lazy’ and shame them for changing jobs, not to do so.
Start of career for the new generation
Anupam Mittal wrote in his post, ‘I have seen many ‘career gurus’ shaming 22 year old youth for switching jobs every year.’ He said, ‘Actually the new generation is not doing this. At the beginning of our career, we do ‘dating’ with the industry to see which role and culture suits us. If you don’t feel good then leave, there is no need to feel bad about it. Because it’s time to explore.
What is the right age to switch jobs?
Anupam Mittal believes that the age of 21 to 24 years is to explore, learn new things and find out your choice, so if you can switch jobs then you should definitely do it. He wrote in the LinkedIn post that in the first year you are learning, in the second you are implementing it, in the third year you are dealing with the mess of the last two years and achieving victory.
When should Gen Z not change jobs?
Anupam Mittal believes that one should stop changing jobs frequently after the age of 25. One should stay in one company and concentrate completely on work. He wrote in his post, ‘Age 25+ should be fully engaged! Find a company worth your while and commit for 4 years. If you want to become a founder or CEO, you’ll have to prove that you can persevere when times get tough. It takes 1 year to understand a job, but 3-5 years to understand an industry. Only then you win.
When are resumes rejected?
Based on his recruitment experience, Anupam said that candidates who do not have at least four to five years of regular experience in their resume are rarely selected by people holding senior positions. He explained that the level of experience is not determined by the excitement of starting a new work, but by staying on the decisions for the right time to see the results.
