UNESCO had officially given this city the title of ‘City of Literature’. The decision was taken on the basis of the city’s literary history, large number of writers, publishing work, easy access to books and regular literary events. This is the first city in India to receive this global honour.
More than 500 libraries showcase literary culture
Kozhikode has 545 libraries with thousands of members. There are more than 70 publishing houses here, which bring out 400 to 500 books every year. The city is also known for producing its writers and litterateurs. Honors like PA Lalitha Award, SK Pottekkat Sahitya Award and Mathrubhumi Sahitya Award are given here, whose aim is to recognize local talent and promote creative thinking.

Among these, the 40-day long Beypore Arts, Crafts, Tourism and Literature Festival is prominent, which is celebrated in the memory of the famous writer Vaikom Muhammad Bashir. There is also the Kerala Mahotsav, which is said to be one of the most literary events in the country.
