The Central Government has approved the plan to build a twin tube tunnel under the Brahmaputra river in Assam. This will be the first tunnel in the country and the second in the world in which a road will pass through one and a railway line will pass through the other. It has been named Twin Tube TBM Tunnel. Considering neighboring China, this tunnel will prove to be very important from strategic as well as economic point of view. The construction of this 33.7 km long tunnel will cost Rs 18,662 crore.

The Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved construction of 4-lane access-control greenfield connectivity on 715 section from Gohpur to Numaligarh on NH-15 under Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) in Assam. It also includes a 15.79 km road and rail tunnel under the Brahmaputra river. This project will benefit Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and other north-eastern states. This will increase the capacity to transport goods. Logistics costs will be reduced and socio-economic development in the region will be accelerated. Its total distance will be 33.7 km.

New doors of trade-industrial development will open

Upon completion of the project, the project will strengthen connectivity between economic centers with strategic, regional economic development. This will open new doors for business and industrial development. This project will generate direct and indirect employment of approximately 80 lakh person-days and pave new ways for development, progress and prosperity in the surrounding areas. Currently, one has to travel a 240 km long route from Numaligarh to Gohpur which takes about 6 hours, but with the completion of the project, the journey between Numaligarh and Gohpur will be covered in just half an hour.

Laying additional railway tracks will increase connectivity to 3,902 villages, benefiting a population of 97 lakhs.

The Cabinet has also approved three multitracking projects of the Railways. These include the third and fourth lines between Kasara and Manmad, third and fourth lines between Delhi and Ambala and third and fourth lines between Bellary and Hospete. Their estimated cost is Rs 18,509 crore. Work on these is expected to be completed by 2030-31. The project covers 12 districts of Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Laying additional tracks will increase connectivity to about 3,902 villages. The population of 97 lakh will benefit and employment will also increase.

Access to major tourist destinations will be easy

These projects will improve access to many major tourist destinations like Trimbakeshwar Jyotirling, Hampi (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Bellary Fort, Tungabhadra Dam and other religious and historical places. These routes are important for transportation of major goods like coal, steel, iron ore, cement, food grains, fertilizers, containers and petroleum products. The capacity addition is expected to add an additional 96 million tonnes of freight per annum.

  • Redevelopment of Ghoti–Trimbak–Jawhar–Manor–Palghar section of NH-160A in Maharashtra has also been approved. The cost is Rs 3,320.38 crore.

  • Approval has been given for construction of four-lane sections of Dhamsia-Bitada/Movi (47.46 km) and Nassarpur-Malotha (60.21 km) in Gujarat. The cost is Rs 4583.64 crore.

  • National Highway- will be widened from Gudebelur to Mahabubnagar in Telangana. The cost is Rs 3175.08 crore.
