The new manufacturing unit of Tata Motors-Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in Tamil Nadu was formally inaugurated. On this occasion, Tata Group Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran described it as a golden day for Tata Motors and its family. He said that 2.5 to 3 lakh vehicles will be manufactured annually in this integrated manufacturing plant.
Project completed in 16 months
He said that earlier in September 2024, MK Stalin had laid the foundation stone of this project. At that time, the Chief Minister had assured to provide all necessary facilities and approvals and asked to start production within 16 months.
The Chief Minister rolled out the first vehicle manufactured at the factory, the Land Rover Evoque model, and symbolically inaugurated the plant by driving the vehicle. Chandrasekaran thanked the Chief Minister for this.
Center for advanced manufacturing
He said that this factory will become a center of advanced level manufacturing for Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover. He also said that the presence of Tata Group has increased rapidly in Tamil Nadu, which includes TCS, Tata Power, Tata Chemicals, Taj Hotels and Tata Electronics. Chandrasekaran also thanked Industries Minister TRB Raja and all the officials for their cooperation.
Expected to create 5,000 direct jobs
The establishment of this manufacturing unit is expected to create at least 5,000 direct jobs. This investment is considered an important step in the company’s expansion in the luxury automobile segment in India. TRB Raja, Minister for Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce, Government of Tamil Nadu, said that apart from direct employment, a large number of ancillary units will be established around this project, which will further increase employment opportunities.
Greenfield project worth Rs 9000 crore
This greenfield project has been developed with an investment of approximately ₹9,000 crore (about US$994 million). Minister Raja said that the construction of the plant was completed in record time, in which better coordination between the state government and the Tata Group played an important role. He said that this unit is only the beginning of the first phase and there are plans to expand the second and third phases in the future, which will increase both production capacity and investment.
- The plant will manufacture internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles as well as electric vehicles (EV), which is an important step towards making Tamil Nadu a major hub of future mobility.
- Raja said that the youth working here have been recruited through the state’s skill development initiatives, especially the ‘Naan Mudalvan’ programme.
- These have provided opportunities to a large number of local youth, especially from Ranipet district, which has promoted inclusive development.
- The state government is hopeful that there will be more investment announcements in the times to come, which may be indicated in the upcoming ‘Convergence Conclave’.
