British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stressed the need to strengthen Europe’s defense capability and military power. He said that in the current global situation, military power has become the basis of balance of power, hence Europe will have to further strengthen its defense system. He said this in the 62nd Munich Security Conference. Heads of more than 60 countries and governments, top leaders of about 50 international organizations and representatives of at least 115 countries are participating in this important global security conference.
What does Europe need to do?
Starmer clearly stated that Europe must be able to deter potential threats and, if necessary, be prepared to fight to defend its people, values and way of life. According to him, Europe will have to collectively stand on its own feet and increase self-reliance on the security front.
The British Prime Minister also advocated increased economic and defense cooperation with the European Union. He indicated that Britain should identify areas where it can move closer to the EU’s single market. Starmer said joint efforts are necessary to bring about ‘generational change’ in defense industrial cooperation.
Deeper economic integration is in the interest of all parties
On relations six years after Brexit, he said now is the time for a renewed focus on closer economic coordination and deeper economic integration is in the interest of all parties. At the same time, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also stressed the need for closer cooperation between Europe and Britain. He said that both sides should come closer to protect security, economy and democratic values. According to him, even years after Brexit, the future of Europe and Britain is linked to each other.
