Two of the country’s largest private sector banks, Axis Bank and HDFC Bank, are gearing up for major changes in their CFOs. According to the information, Puneet Sharma, the current Chief Financial Officer of Axis Bank, may soon become the new CFO of HDFC Bank. If this happens, this will not be a change of just one officer but a leadership change at a senior level in the private banking sector. Along with this, the discussion of change at the CFO level is also intensifying between Bandhan Bank and Axis Bank.
HDFC Bank has also appointed a new chairman in addition to the preparation of a new CFO. The bank has appointed former Financial Services Secretary, former IAS officer and former Chief Electoral Officer Rajeev Kumar as part-time (non-executive) chairman.
These appointments will be subject to the approval of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The tenure of Rajiv Kumar will be 3 three years. While he will also join the Board as an Independent Director from 30 June 2026. Due to which the approval of the shareholders will also be required.
The standing chairman of the bank was under investigation for a long time. The process began in March 2026 after the surprise resignation of the then chairman Atanu Chakraborty. After his resignation, Keki Mistry was given the responsibility as interim chairman.
Rajeev Kumar is believed to have extensive experience in banking and government policy. He has served as Financial Services Secretary and later Chief Election Commissioner of India in the Government of India. The bank believes that his experience will strengthen corporate governance and strategic decision-making.
