Vaibhav Suryavanshi
New Delhi: A complaining message from his coach Manish Ojha and technical improvements have played a big role in the success of Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who played a historic innings of 175 runs in 80 balls against England in the final of the Under-19 World Cup. After scoring 68 runs against Afghanistan in the semi-finals, Manish Ojha had sent a special message to Vaibhav on WhatsApp, which was like a challenge. Ojha had told him that this would probably be your first tournament where you would not be able to score a single century. He had given clear instructions to Vaibhav that once you are set in the final, then come back only after playing a big innings. Vaibhav was so impressed by what the coach said that he scored the second fastest century of the tournament in just 55 balls with the help of 15 fours and 15 sixes in the final and scored a huge total of 175 runs.

Corrected the technical flaw of pull shot

Manish Ojha told that Vaibhav was facing a small technical problem while playing the pull shot, due to which he was not able to convert big scores into centuries. The coach noticed that while hitting the pull shot, Vaibhav’s head would tilt backwards and his back knee would press slightly. In this situation, he could easily play the balls coming on the body, but the short balls outside the off-stump would get the upper edge of his bat. The coach advised him to pull balls outside the off-stump, keeping his head straight and towards the ball, which would give full extension of the arms and bring more power to the shot.

Did wonders at the age of 14

Vaibhav is not even 15 years old yet, but his figures at the senior level look like those of a legendary player. He already has four centuries to his name in domestic cricket, which includes an IPL century and a Vijay Hazare Trophy century. Coach Ojha believes that Vaibhav’s batting has improved tremendously in the last one year. His highest score in domestic T20 is 144 and in List-A is 190 runs. The coach said that Vaibhav’s biggest quality is his ability to learn, he is the only one among hundreds of students who never needed to be scolded, because he understands technical things very quickly.

Away from glamour, Vaibhav’s focus is only on sports.

Despite getting so much fame at a young age, Vaibhav is being kept safe from the glamor of the boy wonder. Since the last IPL, his schedule has been so packed that he has not got a chance to pay attention to the things of the outside world. He has been continuously busy in Under-19 tours, tournaments like Asia Cup and Ranji Trophy. The coach and parents believe that he is still a child, so the family often stays with him during his matches to avoid feeling homesick. His simplicity and his concentration towards the game make him a big star of the future.
