India’s first co-operative taxi service ‘Bharat Taxi’ has been launched in Gujarat, which will free drivers from exploitation by private companies and make them ‘Sarathi’. This initiative will realize the Prime Minister’s dream of ‘Cooperation Se Samriddhi’ and ‘Self-reliant India’, with human development at the centre.
This is a model in which the center of development is not just capital, but human beings
Bharat Taxi: Through ‘Bharat Taxi’, a historic revolution has started in the transportation and mobility sector of the country including Gujarat. Realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mantra of ‘Sahkar Se Samridhi’, the country’s first taxi service on a cooperative basis ‘Bharat Taxi’ has been officially launched today from Gandhinagar to all major cities of Gujarat.
Based on the successful partnership model of Amul and IFFCO, this innovative initiative will free the country’s millions of motorists operating two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws and four-wheelers from being exploited by private app-based companies. With this initiative, taxi drivers are not drivers, but ‘carriers’ and ‘owners’, said Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah.

On this occasion, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said that Amit Shah, as the country’s first Minister of Cooperation, has made successful efforts to change the cooperative societies into a small corporate company without limiting the cooperation sector to a few sectors. One such innovative initiative ‘Bharat Taxi’ service has been launched in Gujarat today from Gandhinagar.
This initiative will further strengthen the Prime Minister’s dream of a self-reliant India. The co-operative sector which was limited to agriculture, animal husbandry and dairying as well as banking has now become a model of charioteer participation with dignity of labour.
When Amit Shah launched Bharat Taxi in Delhi, he said that cooperation is the name of participation in the profits of working people. The Chief Minister specially mentioned that many taxi drivers of Gujarat will also benefit from this ideology. The Prime Minister has adopted the approach of respecting labor in India with the mantra of ‘Shram ev Jayate’ and this idea under the leadership of Amit Shah is at the root of ‘Bharat Taxi’.
For years, taxi drivers only served, but had no share in the profits of the companies and had to subsist on a fixed income of fixed salaries. Bharat Taxi started with the idea of turning this pain into a system. Now the driver will be called ‘Sarathi’. The word charioteer will now symbolize self-reliance, respect and self-respect.
Bharat Taxi, which started with 8 large co-operatives in India, has grown to become the world’s largest driver-owned co-operative. Amit Shah launched this model in February 2026, till date Bharat Taxi has 7 lakh members and 37 lakh customers have availed the taxi service. This is a model of cooperation, in which the center of development is not just capital, but human beings.
New employment opportunities will be created for women vehicle drivers through ‘Sarathi Didi’
The Chief Minister further said that as a result of this new transparency initiative, all information will be clearly available to the passengers and the fare norms will be transparent. So that the interests of both customers and charioteers will be protected. For the women who know how to drive, employment opportunities will also be created through ‘Sarathi Didi’ and the safety of mothers and sisters will also increase.
