In this research center the company is working on technologies to make fixed internet faster. Work on 100G internet is also going on in this centre. But what is this 100G internet and how different is it from our current internet? To understand this mystery, we need to know the journey of data which travels at the speed of light.

What is 100G internet?

In simple words, 100G means speed of ‘100 gigabits per second’ (100 Gbps). This is hundreds of times more powerful than the typical broadband connection you use at home. While we currently consider 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps speeds to be very fast, 100G technology takes data transfer capabilities to a whole different level. This technology primarily serves as the backbone for large data centers, telecom towers, and cloud computing, so that Internet traffic can flow without any delay or interruption.

How does 100G network work?

The entire structure of 100G Internet is based on fiber optic technology. In this, data travels in the form of rays of light instead of electrical signals. A special technology called ‘coherent optics’ is used in this process. This technology encodes data into waves of light in such a way that huge amounts of data can be sent simultaneously over a single optical fiber cable. Nokia’s new center in Chennai will do research on making this technology more efficient.

To achieve this superfast speed, ‘Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing’ (DWDM) is used. You can think of it like a road with different lanes for different colored lights. This technology sends data using different colors of light over the same fiber strand. This reduces the cost of laying cables and increases the capacity to carry data manifold. The new lab in Chennai will test networks ranging from 10G to 100G through this technology.

Key features of 100G technology

The biggest strength of this technology is its bandwidth, which can handle billions of bits of data every second. Latency in data access is extremely low, due to which tasks like video calls, online gaming and live streaming are done without interruption. Additionally, it has an advanced error correction system that maintains data quality even when sending data over long distances.

Although 100G internet will not reach your home directly yet, its impact will definitely be visible. This technology will strengthen existing 5G and future 6G services.
