It is mandatory to use a copper pot to offer water to the Sun God. Copper is considered the metal of the Sun. Do not use plastic, glass or iron utensils even by mistake, because this is considered to spoil the puja and can have negative effects.

While giving water, hold the pot with both hands and keep it in front of your chest. Keep in mind that you should see the Sun God from the middle of the stream of water. To avoid splashing water on your feet while spilling water, you can place a pot or container below it. Later pour that water into some plant.
Chant mantras while offering Arghya to Sun God
Worship done without mantra is considered incomplete. While giving water you can chant the simple mantra Om Suryay Namah. Apart from this, remembering the 12 names of Sun is also helpful in removing obstacles in life.

Pay attention to cleanliness while worshiping Sun God.
Water should always be given to Sun God while facing east. Even if for some reason there are clouds and the sun is not visible, still offer water while facing east. It is considered auspicious to wear clean clothes at the time of worship.

Sunday is dedicated to Sun God. On this day, one should especially reduce the intake of salt or if possible, one should eat food without salt. Consuming meat and alcohol on this day causes Surya Dosha, due to which the work being done starts getting spoiled.]
