i live in dreams
No one in my family is into writing, but I started writing at the age of 12. I have been a girl living in dreams since childhood. I was very excited by the love of stories, poems and films. I wanted a perfect love story for myself since childhood.
I felt love for the first time at the age of 12. Then I used to study in Carman School, Dehradun. I was in ‘A’ division in 7th class and he was in ‘B’ division. We used to look at each other while standing in the school assembly line. Then I wrote a poem on love for the first time.
When I was writing the poem, mother asked for whom were you writing it. When I told my mother about my crush, I got scolded a lot by my parents and teacher. That first love story of mine did not progress, but the writing started.
I left that relationship
I started working from a young age. While pursuing BA in English Literature from Venkateshwara College, I used to work in a call centre. During that time I did not get a chance to write. I did a love marriage at the age of 21. I was in Delhi then. He wanted to live in Australia so I also went with him. After going to Australia, I did a Masters in Applied Linguistics. Studied teacher training. I am a professional teacher. Used to teach English to children of class 11-12 in Australia.
By going abroad one understands the importance of one’s country. I was not enjoying living in Australia. I wanted to come back to India. I have written the poem ‘I am looking for 1999 in 2019’ in this very mood. Maybe we weren’t made for each other. Perhaps getting married early was the biggest mistake of my life. Gradually we realized that our paths are different. Then we both separated and I returned to India.
In 2014, I read my poetry on stage for the first time in Australia. During that time, anger was reflected in my poems. But when I came back to India, my language became natural, it was filled with the color of love.
‘Big Brother’ in Australia became ‘Bigg Boss’ in India
I did the show ‘Big Brother’ in Australia, due to which I got the offer of ‘Bigg Boss’ in India. Life was calling me to its country on this pretext. After ‘Bigg Boss’ I gave myself some time. During that time the trend of ‘open mic’ started in India.
In 2017, I recited my poem on ‘Open Mic’ in India. People liked my poetry very much. After that the process of reciting poetry started and it became my career. I like to recite poems. When we get love from listeners, our courage increases. I wrote poems with great heart since childhood, today poems have become my identity. Soon my book ‘Ishq Ke Saat Padaav’ is being published.
Currently I am doing an international tour for my live show ‘Ishq Hai’. I am happy that this show is becoming very popular. Apart from this, I also write for TV and brands. There are very few female song writers in Bollywood. Now I am also writing songs for films. I have written two songs ‘Parinda and Adhura’.
Found true love in Mumbai
I met Karan for the first time in the lift. He lived on the floor above me, but we had never met each other. We talked formally in the lift. Karan said that if you ever need anything, let me know.
One day when I was recording an online audition in my flat, Karan saw me from his balcony. Karan said, “I can help you with this.” He came to my house with studio light, tripod and DSLR camera. Our friendship started from that day.
One night I had high fever. I called Karan home at 3 o’clock in the night. He took me to the hospital. I had malaria. During that time, Karan took so much care of me that malaria turned into lovearia. Then we got married. Today we have a 2 year old son.
Then I wrote a poem for Karan, ‘Mera Upar Wala’, in which there is a line – ‘He came down as a neighbor, no love, no friendship, but the roof of my house and the ground of his house knew each other for many years.’
I don’t want love but love
One day Karan asked me, “What do you want?” I didn’t say anything at that time, but I wrote a poem on it ‘I don’t want love’, this poem has seven stages of love which touch people’s hearts. I have also named my book ‘Ishq Ke Saat Padav’. Another poem of mine ‘Ishq Hai’ was liked so much that now it has become the title of my live show. You can fall in love with anyone, but love only happens with one person. Love makes you a better person.
I think feeling love, heartbreak, this is also a process of learning and understanding life. Especially we women know what we want in life, but we do not want to know what we do not want in life. When women learn to say ‘no’, their self-love begins from there. I have learned in my life that unless you love yourself, you cannot give love to anyone else.
Ten years ago I had never imagined that one day my life would be so good. When I started loving myself I found true love. I feel connected to Amrita Pritam’s writings. Women in our country have always had to fight for their rights, even if it is the right to love. That’s why I wrote – I don’t want love, I am not demanding it, I deserve it!
