According to Kailash Vati, one can prepare excellent organic fertilizer at home with the help of an old pot. This method is not only cheap but also completely natural. The best thing is that their method of making compost will not smell bad and will provide plenty of nutrients. Because here the right balance of dry leaves, soil and wet kitchen waste is maintained.
Pot preparation and air-ventilation
To make compost, first take a medium or large sized earthen pot. Now, with the help of a sharp object or a drill, make small holes all around the pot. These holes are very important because the process of composting requires oxygen. Due to air circulation, the garbage does not rot, rather it decomposes properly and does not smell bad.
first layer of dry leaves
Spread a thick layer of dry leaves at the bottom of the pot. Dry leaves are the main source of carbon and they work to absorb excess water from kitchen waste. This layer protects the bottom of the pot from getting wet and creates a strong base for the compost.
Layering of soil and kitchen waste
Add a 1-2 inch layer of soil over the dry leaves. After this, spread a layer of peel from your kitchen. Then add soil again and then kitchen waste. Repeat this ‘sandwich’ technique until the pot is filled to the top. Keep in mind that the smaller the pieces of garbage are, the quicker compost will be made.
Magic solution of jaggery and lassi
To speed up the process of composting, you have to prepare a special mixture. For this, mix 200 grams of jaggery well in 2 glasses of buttermilk. The bacteria present in buttermilk and the sweetness of jaggery speed up the process of decomposition many times over. Slowly pour this solution over the filled pot. This mixture will retain moisture in the compost and help beneficial bacteria grow.
what to put and what not to put
The most important thing in this method is that never put cooked things like pulses, rice, cooked vegetables, things made from oil or milk in the pot. Putting cooked food in the pot can lead to insects and a very foul smell. Always use only the peels and stalks of raw fruits and vegetables.
Compost will be made in 3 months
Cover the pot with a lid or sack and keep it in a shady place. Once every 15-20 days, lightly stir the top soil so that air can penetrate inside. After about 3 months, you will see that all the waste has turned into dark brown or black colored powder. It will smell like soil. This is your ‘black gold’, which you can filter and add to your plants.
