Study Abroad: Advantages and disadvantages of studying abroad for Indian students in 2025

However, the latest data revealed in Parliament shows that Indian students no longer want to go abroad. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Education Sukant Majumdar shared figures that show a steady decline in the number of Indian students going abroad for higher education. This decline has been seen the highest in the last 3 years.
The number of Indians going abroad decreased by 31%
In the data given by the minister, it was told that in 2023, 9.08 lakh Indian students went to study abroad. In 2024, this number fell to 7.7 lakh and in 2025, there was a big decline and this number came down to 6.26. In this way, the number of Indians going abroad decreased by 31% in two years. Within 2 years, the number of Indians going abroad has reduced by around 3 lakhs. The decline in the number of students remains a topic of discussion, because many students still want to go abroad.
The government told why students do not want to go abroad?
Sukanta Majumdar It is said that studying abroad is an individual’s choice. It depends on many factors. He said, ‘Studying abroad is a matter of individual choice and choice, which depends on many factors such as affordability, availability of bank loan, knowledge of foreign societies, eligibility for a particular course etc.’ He said that the government has taken such steps in the last few years, due to which the number of students going abroad has reduced.
The minister told how the ‘National Education Policy’ (NEP) Reforms have been made in the education system through 2020. Because of this, the quality of Indian universities has improved and they are able to compete worldwide. Under NEP, infrastructure has been upgraded, accreditation system has been strengthened, research and innovation have been promoted and digital education is being expanded. Because of all these initiatives, foreign countries are no longer that attractive for Indians.
Sukanta Majumdar says that many more steps have been taken to bring global level education system to India. Like foreign universities have been allowed to set up campuses in India. So far, 14 universities have received approval, out of which 5 have been allowed to operate in GIFT City of Gujarat. In this way, for the education for which earlier students had to go abroad. Now they are easily getting the same education in India itself.
