Generation gap is an issue in the society and initiatives are now being taken in schools to overcome it. The Union Education Ministry has also made guidelines for celebrating days like ‘Grandparents Day’ to strengthen the bonding between these two generations. ‘Grandparents Day’ is being celebrated with many activities in all the CBSE schools of the Education Department of Delhi, where every student comes to school with his/her grandparents.

‘Grandparents Day’ in India on the lines of US-Canada

With this step of CBSE, it will go one step further when some activities will be related to this concept throughout the year. In many countries including the US and Canada, the campaign to connect children with their families by linking ‘Grandparents Day’ with ‘Grandfriends’ has yielded effective results. This has been removing the loneliness of both senior citizens and children.

What will happen in schools on Grandparents Day?

To strengthen the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked all schools to organize various activities. Such activities will be organized in schools which will increase bonding between different generations and reduce the generation gap.

Under the recommendations of the National Council of Senior Citizens and the directions of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, CBSE has Guylines Have prepared. Schools have been asked to organize special events on occasions like Independence Day, Children’s Day, International Senior Citizens Day and invite grandparents of the students so that the bond between these different generations can be strengthened.

The Board believes that the participation of senior citizens will develop practical understanding, emotional connect, respect for them and moral values of the students. Schools have also been advised to organize events like ‘Walkathon’ in which grandparents can participate along with their grandchildren.

Bonding is strong, loneliness also goes away

This will also reduce the problem of loneliness and social isolation among senior citizens. Students have also been told that they can plan more such interesting activities, which will increase the closeness between the two generations. CBSE has asked schools to give prior information about these events to the concerned department/ministry and records should be maintained.
