What is the history of Kanchipuram?

Kanchipuram has been a famous and prosperous city since ancient times and that is why its History is also unique. It is situated on the banks of river Vegavati. Initially it was the capital of the Cholas and later the Pallavas. Pallava kings built beautiful temples, wide roads and strong forts here. Kalidas had described it as ‘the best among cities’. Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang also visited here in the 7th century and praised its education and culture.

New Kanchipuram district formed on 1 July 1997

There were major changes in the administration of the district during the British rule. A Collector was appointed for the first time in 1788. Later the district was divided into different parts and many new taluks were created. In the 19th and 20th centuries the district headquarters were established at Saidapettai and then at Kanchipuram. The new Kanchipuram district became official on 1 July 1997.
