Drum Brake
First let’s talk about drum brakes. Drum brakes are old and traditional technology. It consists of a round drum with brake shoes fitted inside it. When you press the brake, these shoes expand outward and stop the wheel by rubbing against the wall of the drum.
advantages and disadvantages
The advantage of drum brakes is that they are cheap to make and buy. This is the reason why drum brakes are provided in budget segment motorcycles. Besides, their maintenance is also easy. Dust or soil does not enter these easily because they are completely closed. But, their disadvantage is that they get heated quickly with continuous use, which can reduce the braking power. At high speed these are not as effective as disc brakes.
Disc Brake
Now let’s talk about disc brakes. These are based on modern technology. In this, an iron plate (disk) is attached to the wheel. When you press the brakes, the brake pads grip this plate tightly on both sides, stopping the wheel.
advantages and disadvantages
Their advantage is that they stop the bike very quickly and accurately, especially at high speeds. Due to their open structure, they cool down quickly, due to which their performance does not reduce even on long journeys or slopes. Even during rain, disc brakes clear water quickly and maintain better grip. Their disadvantage is that they are more expensive than drum brakes. Also, if the disc brake is pressed rapidly or suddenly, there is a fear of the wheel locking and the bike may also skid.
Which one is better for you?
Nowadays, disc brakes are considered much better in terms of safety in motorcycles, especially in racing, adventure and powerful bikes. Also, if the bike has ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) feature, then disc brakes become even safer, because ABS prevents the wheels from locking and the bike from slipping during sudden or forceful braking. Whereas on budget or commuter bikes, drum brakes work well as an economical option. If you ride a 100cc-110cc bike and ride at low speeds (40-50 kmph) in city traffic, drum brakes are economical and adequate.
