What is a Head-up Display (HUD)?
A head-up display is a feature that projects important car information (such as speed, navigation, fuel level, etc.) onto the windshield (front glass) directly in front of the driver. It is named Head-Up because the driver does not need to bend his head down or look towards the instrument cluster while viewing it. He can see all the information while still keeping an eye on the road ahead.
How does this work?
Head-up display (HUD) systems consist of a small projector that is mounted inside the dashboard. It is mainly of two types.
windshield – In this, a small projector installed inside the dashboard projects information directly on the windshield (front mirror) of the car.
Transparent Panel – In this, a small transparent panel is installed just above the dashboard in front of the driver, on which information is visible. This is often seen in budget or mid-range cars.
Advantages of head-up display
There are many benefits of a head-up display. As –
Security – The biggest advantage is that it increases security. Taking your eyes off the road even for a second while driving can be dangerous. With the help of HUD, the driver does not have to look down to check the speed or navigation, thus keeping the focus on the road.
Ease of navigation – It also makes navigation easier. When you use Maps, the HUD also shows you directions. This prevents confusion and makes driving easier. You do not need to look at the mobile phone or infotainment screen again and again.
Premium feel – One advantage of this feature is that it gives a premium feel to budget cars. This feature gives a very modern and futuristic look to the cabin of the car.
Which cars have this feature?
Earlier this feature was available only in expensive cars like Mercedes, BMW and Audi, but now it has started coming in budget range cars also. In India, this feature is available in many cars including Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Frankos, Toyota Glanza and the recently launched Tata Sierra. If you prioritize safety and convenience, the HUD is definitely a great feature. This not only makes the car look futuristic but also actually helps prevent accidents.
