What is cruise control in motorcycles?
In simple words, cruise control is the autopilot mode of your bike. After turning it on, you do not need to pull the throttle. The bike keeps moving automatically at a fixed speed (like 80 kilometers per hour). This system switches off automatically as soon as you press the brake or engage the clutch. This feature automatically fixes the motorcycle at one speed.
Benefits of cruise control feature in bike
Beneficial for long distance – This feature provides great comfort to the rider on the highway or in long distance journeys. Cruise control eliminates the pain that occurs in wrists and fingers due to holding the accelerator in one position for hours.
Better Mileage – When the bike runs at a constant speed, there is less pressure on the engine and fuel consumption is also less. This gives you better mileage on the highway.
Avoidance of challan – There are often speed limits on highways. A challan is issued for riding a bike above the prescribed limit. After setting cruise control, your bike will not go above the prescribed limit, so that you can avoid unknowingly overspeeding challan.
Some disadvantages and challenges
Road condition – The condition of most roads is not good, especially in rural areas. Rough roads, potholes on the roads, animals etc. are common problems. In such a situation, cruise control is not very beneficial, and its use in such places can prove to be dangerous because there can be a slight delay in responding suddenly.
Expensive maintenance – The bikes which have this feature are equipped with ride-by-wire technology and extra sensors. If there is any fault in these, the cost of repairing can be quite high.
Should I buy a motorcycle with cruise control or not?
If you mostly travel on highways or undertake long distance journeys, then this feature can prove beneficial for you. This feature will make your journey very easy. If you ride a bike inside the city, then this feature will not be beneficial for you. You won’t even be able to use it properly. Also, it can be dangerous for your safety.
