Car owners’ uproar, FASTag becomes easy to get, NHAI ends KYV tension

If you have a car and you often travel on the highway, then there is a good news for you. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has made a major change in the rules for issuing Fastag. From February 1, 2026, KYV (Know Your Vehicle) will not be required while getting a new FASTag for private vehicles like cars, jeeps and vans. Now these vehicle owners will not have to worry about KYV. This has been done with the aim of making travel at the toll plaza easier. Let us tell you for whom this rule is applicable and what will be the benefit from it.

there will be no delay now

NHAI has abolished the requirement of KYV (Know Your Vehicle) for small vehicles like cars, jeeps and vans. Earlier, even after Fastag was activated, vehicle owners used to get calls from the bank to re-submit documents or for verification. People were troubled by this. Also, this sometimes caused delay in starting the tag. Now all this hassle has been eliminated. Once the tag is received from the bank, it will be immediately ready for use.

Banks will have full responsibility

Now the entire responsibility of verifying the information of your vehicle will be on the banks. Banks will verify your vehicle details directly from the government vehicle (VAHAN) database. At the time of giving the tag, the bank will check all your necessary documents. Once you get the tag, you will not need to submit any document again. With this, customers will not need repeated verification.

Relief for old users also

Even if you already have Fastag, you do not need to worry. Unless any anomaly is found in Fastag, no verification will be asked from you. Investigation will be conducted only in those cases where Fastag is found to be installed on the wrong vehicle, any complaint has been received regarding the tag, the tag is not installed properly or Fastag is being misused.

Why was this decision taken?

NHAI had been receiving feedback for a long time that despite having valid documents, people were getting stuck in the process. Many times people’s money also got stuck in the system. With this step of the government, traveling at the toll plaza will now become easier and faster. This exemption is only for private vehicles like cars, jeeps and vans. This exemption is not given to commercial vehicles (like buses, trucks).
