What is the correct speed to drive a car?
Generally, for cars, the speed of 70 to 90 kilometers per hour (kmph) is considered best in terms of good mileage. If you are driving a car on the highway then the speed of 70-80 kmph in top gear (5th) is considered best. This puts less pressure on the engine and makes it work well. With this the car gives its maximum mileage. At the same time, when you drive in the city, a speed of 90 is not possible due to traffic. Here you should try to maintain a speed of 40 to 50 kmph and avoid applying brakes repeatedly or pressing the accelerator suddenly.
Main reasons for poor mileage
extremely high speed – If the car is driven at very high speed (like 100 kmph) then the pressure on the engine increases. The engine has to use more power, due to which the mileage may fall. Besides, air pressure also increases at high speed, which also affects the mileage.
Wrong gear selection – Driving in a high gear at low speed or in a low gear at high speed puts stress on the engine. This also reduces the mileage. So always change gear at the right time and drive the car on the right gear.
Repeatedly brake and accelerator – Suddenly increasing the speed of the vehicle and then hitting the brakes is the biggest enemy of mileage. This is called rash driving, which wastes fuel.
Tips to get better mileage
Use of cruise control – If your car has cruise control, use it on the highway. It maintains a constant speed which saves fuel.
Tire pressure – Maintain correct air pressure in tyres. Due to less air, friction increases, which reduces mileage. Always maintain the tire pressure recommended by the company.
Correct use of AC – Driving at high speed with the windows open increases air drag. In such a situation, running the AC is better than opening the window. But switching off the AC in the city at low speeds can improve mileage.
