The mating of Asiatic lion ‘Dhananjaya’ and female ‘Dhara’ gave birth to three lion cubs at the end of 105 days of pregnancy. Along with this, 55 lion cubs have been born in Rajkot Zoo so far
Narendra Ahir, Rajkot: Rajkot Municipal Corporation-run Zuma has given birth to another lioness there and given birth to triplets. Asiatic lion male Dhananjaya and female lioness Dhara at the end of 105 days of pregnancy by lion female Dhara last date. On the night of 11th, Singh Bal Jive 03 (three) is born.
There are two male and one female lion cubs. Both mother and cub are healthy. Round the clock monitoring of mother and cubs is done through CCTV by Zoo Veterinary Officer and team.
This is the second time Lioness Dhara has given birth to a cub. Earlier on 5/12/2025 two lion cubs were born from mating with male lion Dhananjaya. Generally, big cats like lions, tigers, leopards give birth to two to three cubs on an average. In very rare cases, one litter or four to five litters are born.
The pristine environment of the natural forest at Rajkot Zoo is suitable for Asiatic lions and white tigers, which have been breeding very successfully over time. Currently, the number of Asiatic lions has reached 17 with the birth of Asiatic lion cub 03 at the zoo. It includes adult male-04, adult female-08, juvenile male-02 and cub-03.
A total of 55 (fifty) lion cubs have been born so far including the new born lion cub at Rajkot Zhu. Under the wildlife exchange scheme, Rajkot Zoo has given lions to many zoos in India in exchange for other important species of animals and birds. These include Mysore Zoo, Hyderabad Zoo, Chhatbir Zoo – Punjab, Lucknow Zoo, Bhilai Zoo – Chhattisgarh, Kankaria Zoo, Ahmedabad, Sakkarbagh Zoo – Junagadh etc.
At present, a total of 618 wild animals-birds of 70 different species are displayed for the visitors in the zoo. The modern development of Rajkot Zoo has also significantly increased the number of visitors.
