unique taxi of the future
Volkswagen has already released its ID. Buzz has shown a robotaxi based on the van, which will start selling from next year. But Gen.Urban is completely different from that. It has been specially designed for taxi work only. Its look is quite futuristic and it looks like Volkswagen’s electric cars (ID. Series). It has been designed from the beginning as a self-driving taxi, which makes it even more special.
What is Gen.Urban?
This is a new prototype of Volkswagen which has been specially designed to be used as a robotaxi. Right now this is a research project, but in the future this car can be seen running on the roads without a driver. When you sit inside it, you will not see any physical control (like gear or brake).
What does a car look like from inside and outside?
Car without steering – There is no control in this taxi. At present, for safety, a driver sits in the passenger seat, who can control the car with the help of a joystick if needed.
Unique doors – This car has four doors and the rear doors open in the opposite direction. There is no B-pillar in the middle, which makes it very easy for passengers to get in and out.
Sensors and cameras – There is no side mirror in this car. Cameras have been installed in its place. There are many sensors installed on the roof and corners of the car which help it see the path.
The real purpose of testing
At present, this is a research project. Volkswagen wants to see how people feel and react when they sit in a car without steering. Currently, this car is running on a fixed route in Wolfsburg and mainly company employees are traveling in it.
Preparing to become a leader in Europe
American and Chinese companies are already ahead in the field of robotaxi. Volkswagen aims to become the leader of robotaxi in the European market. Although it is just a prototype right now, it is expected that in the future it will also be introduced to the general public. This research vehicle indicates that the company may soon launch a fully automatic taxi in the market.
