The race for Artificial Intelligence (AI) is intensifying in the world, but now this competition will not be limited to just data centers and chips. Tesla and SpaceX owner Elon Musk has presented a very ambitious plan for the future of AI. In a meeting with employees of his AI company xAI, Musk revealed that in the future, AI models will become so powerful that Earth’s data centers will become small for them.
Musk will build a factory on the moon
In this meeting, Musk suggested that a manufacturing facility be built on the surface of the Moon to support the next generation AI system. Musk believes that as AI models become more powerful, they will require so much computing capacity to run that existing data centers on Earth will not be able to meet them sustainably in the long run.
“You have to go to the moon,” he said bluntly, emphasizing that infrastructure built in space could provide a decisive edge in the global competitive edge for AI.
What is the whole project?
Musk wants to build not just a data center but an entire factory on the moon. According to Musk’s thinking, a factory will be set up on the Moon which will make satellites specially designed for AI. To send these satellites into space, ‘mass driver’ technology will be used, which can deliver the payload into orbit without rocket fuel.
There is no shortage of resources and space in space, through which the processing power of AI can be increased manifold.

Musk said that if we look at the energy consumption of today’s human civilization, we are using only 1% of the Earth’s potential energy. If we could capture even one millionth of the Sun’s total energy, it would be about one million times more than what is used by today’s civilization.
The Sun accounts for 99.8% of the total mass of our solar system. If we have to make proper use of the sun’s energy, we will have to go beyond the limits of the Earth.

Musk has long said that the basis of a technological revolution is “scale.” The more complex AI systems become, the greater the demand for hardware and energy.
Tech companies around the world are busy acquiring advanced chips, building huge data centers and hiring the best engineers. Musk indicates that simply building large data centers on Earth will not be enough in the future.
During the meeting, he said that it is difficult to imagine how a very large level of intelligence would think, but it would be very exciting to see it come true.
SpaceX and xAI merged
Musk has taken a big step to turn this dream into reality. He has confirmed that xAI will now become a part of SpaceX.
