Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the Indian community upon his arrival in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, said that digital cooperation between the two countries is gaining momentum and India’s flagship digital payments system, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), will soon be launched in Malaysia. He said, it is a privilege for us that we played a role in setting up Malaysia’s first and Asia’s largest insulin manufacturing facility. You will be happy to know that we are going to open a new Consulate of India in Malaysia soon. This will make our relations even stronger.

UPI’s global expansion: from France to Bhutan

It is noteworthy that, according to the information given in the Parliament, India’s popular payment platform UPI is now fully active in the following countries:


  • United Arab Emirates (UAE)

  • Singapore

  • bhutan

  • Nepal

  • Sri Lanka

  • France

  • mauritius

  • Queue

Enumerated Achievements

Enumerating India’s major achievements, the PM said that India has become the second largest mobile manufacturer in the world. These include significant growth in defense exports, India’s emergence as the third largest startup hub globally and the creation of the world’s largest digital public infrastructure and fintech ecosystem, with almost half of the world’s digital transactions taking place through the UPI platform in India. He also mentioned India’s commitment towards clean energy and said that solar power capacity has increased 40 times in the last decade.


PM Modi said that India is seen as a reliable partner for development. Be it Britain, UAE, Australia, New Zealand, Oman, European Union or America, all these countries have trade agreements with India. Trust has become the strongest currency of India. During this period, NRIs kept raising slogans of Modi-Modi enthusiastically. It is noteworthy that a trade agreement was signed between India and the European Union in January. Apart from this, the outline of the interim trade agreement between India and America was agreed upon on Saturday itself.

India saw a big change in a decade

PM Modi said, there has been rapid change in India in the last decade. He said, when we met in 2015, I talked to you about India’s potential. Now, I am talking to you about India’s performance. India has seen big changes in a decade. At that time we were the 11th largest economy in the world. Now, we are close to joining the top 3. The PM said, we are also the fastest growing major economy in the world.

Invitation to tourists to visit India

The PM expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Ibrahim for attending the event and expressing his views on the future of India-Malaysia relations.
